Why the Blowout Remains a Classic

Few hairstyles are as universally flattering as a well-executed blowout. It adds body, shine, and polish to almost any hair type — and when done correctly at home, it can last two to three days. The secret lies in preparation, technique, and the right tools.

What You'll Need

  • A professional-grade blow dryer (at least 1875 watts) with a concentrator nozzle
  • A round brush — medium barrel for medium-length hair, large barrel for longer hair
  • Heat protectant spray or serum
  • Sectioning clips
  • A lightweight volumising mousse or blowout cream
  • Optional: a flat wrap brush or paddle brush for the finishing pass

Step-by-Step: The Perfect At-Home Blowout

1. Start With Clean, Towel-Dried Hair

A blowout works best on freshly washed hair. After washing, gently squeeze out excess water with a microfibre towel. Your hair should be damp — not dripping wet — before you begin styling.

2. Apply Your Prep Products

Work a golf-ball sized amount of volumising mousse through the lengths of your hair from root to tip. Follow with a heat protectant spray, distributing it evenly. These two products together protect your hair from heat damage while setting the foundation for lasting volume.

3. Section Your Hair

Divide your hair into at least four sections — two at the bottom and two at the top. Clip the upper sections out of the way. Working in sections prevents you from rushing and ensures every part gets proper attention.

4. Dry the Roots First

Using your fingers and the dryer on medium heat, rough-dry the roots by moving the dryer in an upward direction to encourage lift. Don't worry about the ends yet — focus entirely on getting the roots about 80% dry at this stage.

5. Use the Round Brush for Tension and Shine

Take a 2-inch section of hair. Place the round brush underneath the section near the root, wrap the hair around the barrel, and follow the brush with the blow dryer's concentrator nozzle pointed downward along the hair shaft. This is the key to shine — always blow in the direction of the cuticle.

Roll the brush down the section, keeping tension throughout, until you reach the ends. Repeat this on each section.

6. Work Your Way Up

Release the next section and repeat the process, always working from underneath upward. The top sections are most visible, so take extra care here.

7. Finish With a Cool Shot

Once a section is styled, blast it with the cool shot button on your dryer for 5–10 seconds. This seals the cuticle and locks in the shape, giving you that glossy, polished finish that lasts.

8. The Final Touch

Once all sections are done, use a boar-bristle brush for a final smoothing pass from roots to ends. Finish with a tiny amount of lightweight hair oil on the ends for extra gloss — but avoid the roots to prevent greasiness.

Tips to Make It Last Longer

  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction overnight.
  • Use dry shampoo at the roots on day two to refresh volume.
  • Avoid humidity as much as possible in the first hour after styling.

With a little practice, an at-home blowout becomes second nature — and a genuinely satisfying skill to have in your styling arsenal.
